Introduction to CENTURY Secondary Academic Assessments

Modified on Thu, 11 Sep at 4:01 PM

We are proud to now offer baseline and end-of-year assessments on CENTURY, in a new area of the platform, accessible via your usual CENTURY logins. Currently in secondary we offer year baselines in mathematics and science.

Mathematics

Our Year 7 Baseline Assessment is designed to identify gaps in the foundational knowledge essential for success at Key Stage 3. It places a strong emphasis on Number skills, while also covering key concepts from Geometry, Measures, and Statistics.

The assessment includes a broad range of question difficulties, making it accessible to lower-attaining students while offering sufficient challenge for the most able. This assessment can be completed within a single 50-minute lesson. It serves as a precise diagnostic tool, enabling teachers to quickly pinpoint learning gaps and effectively inform planning at both class and year group levels.

Science

Our Year 7 Baseline Assessment is designed to ensure a smooth transition to secondary science by strategically building upon core Key Stage 2 English National Curriculum content. We meticulously selected foundational scientific knowledge from Years 3 to 6 that is directly relevant and prerequisite to the Key Stage 3 curriculum, while deliberately omitting content domains not revisited until the GCSE course.

This assessment can be completed within a 50-minute lesson. It provides teachers with a precise diagnostic tool, enabling them to immediately identify learning gaps, inform strategic planning, and effectively differentiate instruction, fostering a more confident and successful start to secondary school science for every student.

How are these different from diagnostics?

These summative assessments are designed to test students across entire subjects in a more formalised way at the beginning or end of the year.

Diagnostics, on the other hand, focus on more specific topic areas; will influence the pathway and can be done in a less formal manner, in line with day-to-day teaching and learning.

The future of assessments on CENTURY

We will be continuing to develop our assessments suite, with our next steps including:

  • Standardisation of questions and submissions

  • Strengthening links between assessment submissions and learning recommendations on the platform

  • Developing additional assessments

  • Long-form written assessments to enable us to build an English assessment

COMING SOON: Reporting

You may download CSV and PDF reports for students from the platform, giving a breakdown of their performance across the topic area.
